Istanbul's history is as diverse as it is long. From Roman chariot races to Ottoman palaces, this city has it all. One of the first places you should visit is the Hagia Sophia, a monumental architectural wonder that has served as an Orthodox cathedral, a mosque, and now a museum.

Next up is the Blue Mosque, officially known as the Sultan Ahmet Mosque. With its six minarets and sweeping architecture, it's a true icon of Istanbul. Inside, you'll find 20,000 hand-painted ceramic tiles that decorate the mosque’s interior, and at night, the mosque is lit up with blue lights—hence its popular nickname.

Another must-visit is Topkapi Palace, once the main residence of the Ottoman sultans for over 400 years. Nowadays, it serves as a museum housing important artifacts, including religious relics.

Turkish cuisine is renowned worldwide and Istanbul is the perfect place to dive in. Begin your culinary adventure with some classic Turkish breakfast - think olives, cheese, tomatoes, and the famous simit bread rings. Don't forget to try Menemen, a traditional dish made with eggs, tomato, green peppers, and spices.

For lunch or dinner, opt for the national dish of Turkey, the Kebab. While there are many varieties to try, the most popular ones are the Doner Kebab and the Adana Kebab. A visit to Istanbul isn't complete without sampling the fresh fish and seafood at one of the city's many excellent seafood restaurants, particularly those located by the Bosphorus.

Finally, indulge in some sweet treats. Turkish delight and Baklava are world famous, but there’s also the lesser-known but equally delicious Katmer and Sütlaç to discover.

Istanbul’s history spans over 2000 years, and there's no shortage of historical sites to visit. Begin your historical tour at the iconic Hagia Sophia, an architectural marvel with a history that dates back to the Roman Empire. Just a stone's throw away is the Sultan Ahmet Mosque, also known as the Blue Mosque for its stunning blue Iznik tiles.

Further along, the Topkapi Palace, once the main residence of the Ottoman sultans, now houses an extensive collection of artifacts. A short walk from the palace will lead you to the Basilica Cistern, an ancient underground water storage that's a masterpiece of Byzantine engineering.

Finally, don’t miss out on the Grand Bazaar and the Spice Market, both historic marketplaces where you can shop for traditional Turkish goods.

Istanbul's public transportation system is diverse and extensive, including buses, trams, funiculars, metro lines, and ferries. The Istanbulkart, a rechargeable smart card, is the most convenient way to pay for public transport. You can purchase one at major transit stops and kiosks throughout the city.

The metro is a quick and efficient way to get around, especially for long distances. For shorter journeys, trams and buses are excellent options. Additionally, the ferry offers a picturesque way to traverse the Bosphorus, connecting the European and Asian sides of the city.

Remember that Istanbul is a city of hills, so comfortable walking shoes are a must. Also, traffic can be heavy, especially during rush hour, so always allow extra time for your journey.
